We caught up with the Construction Department at Crimson Studios in Chatsworth and Construction Coordinator Randy Childs who walked us through the sets. We bumped into General Forman Dan Colegrove and the Propmaker crew along the way. Childs estimated that he and his crew built over fifty sets for the season including all the miscellaneous sets. His favorite was at Blue Cloud Ranch – “We had the bones of a FOB there. One of the sets we did included a suicide gate. We purchased sea containers, hesco bags, custom fencing and took four containers and stacked them up and built a watch tower command center on top. It was the first set they shot and it really set the tone for the whole season. The set is shot in every episode. Plus, we built a great mesa set with ruins that we featured in the pilot that hopefully will be there a long time.”
68 Whiskey posed many enticing challenges. Childs explains: “There is no book on how to be a construction coordinator or for that matter, any craft or position in Hollywood. The amazing thing about this show is we dealt with so many variations of elements. We had heat, Santa Ana winds, fires, dust, helicopters, cold early days, snake wranglers and rain. You really had to stay on your toes. It was a lot of fun dealing with so many different aspects that we don’t normally think about.”
